Cornerstone Scottish Terriers is located in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. Our family has loved and been owned by Scotties for generations. Our interests include conformation, agility and barn hunts. We started out as your typical pet owners and as we grew to understand and really appreciate these intelligent, loving and tenacious dogs we felt compelled to work towards furthering the integrity of these longstanding hearty bloodlines. We feel this can be accomplished through extremely selective breeding and education. Like most Terriers, Scotties need very special people. They require a certain understanding to thrive and be good family members. We participate in AKC, CKC, and UKC events. We use these events as a social outlet, fun and stimulation for our family. Our Scotties love it!
Scottish Terriers are referred to as a lionhearted breed. This is extremely fitting. They are extremely intelligent, fiercely loyal, very curious and wildly independent! They need mental stimulation and a loving, consistent and firm upbringing. They have a long memory and don't trust easy if their trust is broken. So this means if you strike them they don't forget! Using the term "firm upbringing" means to set strong, appropriate boundaries and maintain them without violence. Scotties were originally bred for Varmint control. The Scottie's compact and strong body is perfect for burrowing into the hillside after varmints like badgers and rodents. Strong, powerful and large teeth allowed them to grab and hold their prey tightly in close quarters. Strong neck and muscular shoulders make them very efficient in delivering a decisive death to the quarry with a sharp, quick shake breaking the neck while their handler pulls them out of the hole by their tail which is designed perfectly as a handle. This may seem unnecessary nowadays but it is very important to completely understand the dog you may want as a family member, including their potentially strong instincts. A well socialized Scottie makes a fantastic pet. They can be very well adjusted, even tempered, fun and loving if raised right. Scotties left to their own devises will be a Monster! It is important to make sure you are knowledgeable about the breed and willing to make a commitment.
